First Day of School 2010

The bus was twenty minutes late.

I return from the hub-bub of excited parents and new kindergardeners, the din of fall meetings after summer vacations.

I enter the house, silent and still with no boys to bounce about.

I am still haunted by the words he wrote in his notebook to his teachers:

I have bad energy today I'm sorry

Why am I the one with butterflies in my stomach on the first day of school?

Post Script: Joey is on his beloved same bus with the driver he's had since he was 2. He was really happy to see her, and to see something familiar to start school.

The bus didn't come, it was an 8 passenger van... do they think we don't need to know these things ahead of time??

No meltdowns but definite confusion in his body language.

Met the van at school, saw him in his room with the teacher... He's been very excited about going, but he was still overwhelmed. No behaviour, but again it was obvious he was overwhelmed. The teacher noticed too... and was spending a lot of time, familiarizing him with everything and everyone while the EA's dealt with everyone else.

Wow- that message gave me goosebumps too. Our first day went well... I think. No phonecalls yet, but I haven't exhaled yet.

"I have bad energy today I'm sorry." Breaks.my.heart.

But, at the same time? WOW. How incredibly self aware to be able to put it out there like that.

Here's hoping the teacher(s) helped him to shake off the bad energy. xo
